The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is celebrating Archaeology Month this October with various events and programs across the state. The City of Alexandria, known for its archaeological stewardship, invites the public to participate in these celebrations by attending events that highlight significant archaeological sites and preservation efforts.

One of the featured events is the "Buried Ships of Robinson Landing" exhibit on Friday, October 4, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Located at 7 Pioneer Mill Way, this temporary windowfront exhibit offers a glimpse into scale models of three 18th-century vessel remnants excavated in 2018. Archaeologists will be present to explain how these ships contributed to land creation along Alexandria's waterfront.

On Tuesday, October 8, at 7 p.m., the Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC) will present the Ben Brenman Awards during an Alexandria City Council Meeting at 301 King Street. These awards recognize individuals and groups who have significantly contributed to Alexandria's archaeology.

Another event, "Slip Into the Past at Art Safari," is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum located at 105 N Union Street, #327. Participants can experiment with pottery slip designs from the 19th century and apply temporary tattoos inspired by ceramic designs as part of a family-friendly activity within the larger Art Safari event at Torpedo Factory Art Center.

The Office of Historic Alexandria continues its mission to preserve and share the city's history through museums, historic sites, archives, tours, exhibits, and public programs. By confronting its past and promoting inclusivity, Historic Alexandria aims to enrich both residents' and visitors' experiences while supporting equity initiatives within the city.

As Alexandria celebrates its 275th anniversary since its founding in 1749, it remains committed to connecting with its past to shape a brighter future. More information about these celebrations can be found at alexandriava.gov/ALX275.
