The Virginia Department of Education announced on April 6 that it will host an in-person listening session for Region 4 at Alexandria City High School’s Minnie Howard Campus on Wednesday, April 8, at 6:00 p.m. The event is part of a series of sessions across the Commonwealth aimed at gathering feedback from Virginians about public education.
The purpose of these listening sessions is to give division leaders, educators, parents, students, and community members a chance to share their experiences with the state’s education system. Participants are encouraged to discuss both successes and areas where improvement is needed so that state leaders can better support educators and students.
Discussion topics for the session will include identifying strengths and challenges within schools, shaping ongoing supports in literacy and math instruction, evaluating how well students are prepared for college or careers after high school, considering how schools are evaluated through accountability and accreditation processes, and discussing strategies for recruiting and retaining teachers and staff.
In addition to the in-person event in Alexandria, there will be subsequent virtual sessions available. The Virginia Department of Education encourages those interested to learn more about the Commonwealth Listening Tour or submit feedback online.
These efforts reflect an ongoing initiative by state education officials to engage with communities directly as they work toward ensuring every child has access to high-quality education.
