The Virginia Railway Express announced on Apr. 23 that King Street and Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria will experience weekend closures in May due to the construction of two replacement bridge spans as part of the Alexandria Station and Bridge Improvements Project.

The work is intended to reduce maintenance needs, limit service interruptions, and bring the bridges up to current safety standards for both pedestrians and motorists traveling underneath. The project is scheduled over three weekends: May 1-4, May 15-18, and May 29-June 1. During these periods, King Street will be fully closed between Russell Road and Daingerfield Road with traffic detoured to Duke Street. Commonwealth Avenue will remain open but limited to a single alternating lane directed by flaggers. Sunset Drive will only be accessible to local traffic.

Sidewalk access under the bridge connecting King Street to the station tunnel will also be closed during construction times, while sidewalks along Commonwealth Avenue stay open. Detour signs will direct pedestrians accordingly. Additionally, stairs from the east platform to King Street are set to close starting May 15.
