The City of Alexandria announced on Apr. 14 that Witter Place Apartments will begin accepting applications for affordable housing units starting May 14. The new community, located at 2712 Duke Street, is expected to be ready for occupancy by September 1 and will offer a total of 94 two- and three-bedroom units.

The announcement matters as it addresses the need for affordable housing in Alexandria, providing accessible options for families and individuals with different income levels. The project includes ten mobility-accessible units equipped with features such as side-by-side washer/dryers, accessible height countertops, a designated kitchen workspace, and optional grab bars in bathrooms. Two additional units are designed specifically for residents with visual or hearing impairments.

All apartments include in-unit washer/dryers. Residents will have access to amenities including a fitness center, community room, business center, indoor bicycle storage, Wi-Fi service, telehealth office, and free underground parking for the first 65 qualifying residents. To be eligible for these units, applicants must meet specific income requirements based on area median income (AMI) brackets ranging from 40% to 60%. Income minimums require that household earnings be at least two-and-a-half times the monthly rent. Rents vary by unit size and AMI percentage; utilities are not included.

Applications can be submitted via email or in person beginning May 14 at the property address. Each adult applicant must pay a $32 application fee; security deposits range from $500 up to one month’s rent depending on credit results. Separate pet fees also apply.
