Representative Don Beyer, who has been serving Virginia's 8th district in the U.S. Congress since 2015, expressed his concerns on Twitter regarding tax enforcement and its implications on governance. Beyer replaced Jim Moran in Congress and is a graduate of Williams College.
On February 20, 2025, Beyer stated "Weakening enforcement on the rich will let tax cheats avoid paying their fair share and add billions to our deficits. Musk and Trump don't care about reform or saving money, they just want to break the government so they can gain more wealth and power."
Later that day, he commented on changes affecting the IRS during tax season: "Musk and Trump are gutting the IRS in the middle of tax filing season. As Musk unleashes his unvetted cronies on Americans’ private personal information and meddles with IT systems he doesn’t understand, he risks plunging our tax system into chaos."
Continuing his critique into February 21, 2025, Beyer remarked on the firing of civil servants: "These and thousands more conscientious civil servants who have been fired are being punished simply for doing their jobs and serving the country. This is likely illegal, and makes the government less responsive to the people. All of this is stupid, destructive, and corrupt."
