Virginia Hospital Center issued the following announcement on Dec. 7
Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 75 years, has been named a top teaching hospital by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization recognized as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality. This marks VHC’s fifth Top Hospital recognition from the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Top Hospital awards are widely accepted as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.
“We are honored to once again be recognized as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals,” said James B. Cole, President & CEO of Virginia Hospital Center. “This recognition as one of the top 149 hospitals in the country reflects the hard work and dedication of our incredible VHC team. We are pleased to be acknowledged as standard-setters for patient care and look forward to providing the same excellent level of care to our community in the coming year.”
In addition to receiving the Top Teaching Hospital Award, Virginia hospital Center also recently received its 19th consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from the Leapfrog Group.
More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for Top Hospital awards. Among those, Virginia Hospital Center was the only hospital in the Washington, DC metro area and one of only 72 hospitals nationwide to receive a Top Teaching Hospital distinction.
The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.
“We are pleased to recognize Virginia Hospital Center as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia Hospital Center has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the DC metro area. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”
To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.
