Virginia Hospital Center issued the following announcement on Jan. 19

Virginia Hospital Center (VHC), a community-based hospital providing medical services to the Washington, DC metropolitan area, has named Christopher T. Lane as its next President & CEO. Lane, who will officially begin his duties in late March, succeeds outgoing VHC President & CEO James B. Cole who has been at VHC for 36 years.

“I am honored to have been selected to serve as Virginia Hospital Center’s next President & CEO,” said Lane. “VHC’s incredible employee culture and passion for providing excellent patient care are evident the moment you set foot on the Hospital campus. I am proud to continue Jim Cole’s legacy of patient-focused quality care and excited to take the helm as VHC continues its expansion efforts to bring that level of service to an even larger patient population across the DC metro area.”

Lane comes to VHC from Kaleida Health, Western New York’s largest health care system, where he has served as President of the system’s   flagship hospital Buffalo General Medical Center and the Gates Vascular Institute since 2016. Buffalo General is a 492-bed tertiary medical center with award-winning stroke, neurosurgery, cardiac, bariatrics, and orthopedics programs. With more than 4,500 employees and net annual revenues in excess of $750 million, Buffalo General sees more than 55,000 patients in its emergency department, 24,000 admissions, and 800 open heart procedures each year and is the largest training site for the University at Buffalo Medical School. Lane is also a corporate Vice President with Kaleida Health, with system responsibilities that include leading imaging, long-term care, and joint-ventured surgery centers.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chris to Virginia Hospital Center and think he will do an excellent job stepping into the role of President & CEO,” said Russell McWey, MD, Chairman of the VHC Board. “Chris’s experience forming strategic alliances and partnerships and his record of success with growth and retention efforts make him the perfect person to guide our health system forward as we embark on this next chapter.”

Since joining Kaleida Health in 2003, Lane has also served as President of Millard Fillmore Suburban and DeGraff Memorial Hospitals. Before joining Kaleida, he served as administrator of Covenant Health Systems in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Lane is the winner of the prestigious Modern Health Care Up and Comer Award (given annually to only 12 Healthcare Executives nationwide), Buffalo Business First's "40 under 40," Buffalo Business First "Health Care 50" and the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas Citizen of the Year 2006 award, among others. A long-time Buffalo area resident, Lane has a dedicated record of community engagement, sitting on the Executive Board of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce and Millard Ambulatory Surgery Center as well as the Board of Directors of the Episcopal Church Home and Canterbury Woods.

Lane holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY and received his master's degree in healthcare administration from D'Youville College in Buffalo, NY.

Lane will be joined by his wife of 22 years, Robin, and their two college-aged children.
