Inova Health System is pleased to announce the purchase of approximately 35 acres of land adjacent to the north of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.
The land is currently developed and used under a long-term ground lease to RBDW Amberleigh LLC as the Amberleigh apartment community.
Inova has no immediate plans for the land and will have no role in operation of the housing units for the duration of the term of the ground lease. The purchase of the land will not have any effect on the ground lease, the ownership of the apartments, or the current residents.
“Given the clear strategic location relative to other Inova resources, this is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a foundation for long-term growth in support of Inova’s mission,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, Inova Health System President and CEO.
Inova Fairfax Hospital opened as a 95-bed facility in 1961 and has steadily grown in size and services. It is now the region’s largest hospital and only Level 1 Trauma Center, and it has become a nationally recognized medical, surgical, educational, and research center of excellence with 923 licensed beds. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked Inova Fairfax Medical Campus the #1 hospital in the Washington, D.C., metro area and the Commonwealth of Virginia for the second year in a row.
“Acquiring this property, much like our purchase of the Inova Center for Personalized Health campus site in 2015, provides Inova the long-term planning flexibility to meet the growing and evolving healthcare needs of our community for generations to come,” Jones said.
Inova purchased the former ExxonMobil headquarters site across Gallows Road from Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in 2015. Two years later, the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, offering the region’s most comprehensive and advanced cancer prevention, screening, and care, opened on what is now known as the Inova Center for Personalized Health campus. The Inova Center for Personalized Health is also home to the Inova Specialty Center, Inova Sports Medicine, the Inova Joan and Russell Hitt Center for Healthy Living, the Inova Mather Proton Therapy Center, the Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center, and will include other research, education, and medical services in the future.
When viewed in context of Inova’s existing footprint with Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, the Inova Center for Personalized Health, colocation with Fairfax County at the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health, and recent leases in the adjacent Willow Oaks Corporate Center, Inova has established a regional healthcare hub with room to expand as community health needs grow and change.
