The City of Alexandria is set to host the 52nd Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial on January 15, 2025. The event, themed "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice & Democracy," will include a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:20 p.m., followed by a program from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to register for this free event.
In addition, archaeologists from Wetland Studies and Solutions and Alexandria Archaeology have uncovered remnants of a wooden canal lock floor in Old Town North. The public can view these remains on January 19, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with experts available to provide information about the site.
Alexandria City Archaeologist Eleanor Breen recently presented at the Society for Historical Archaeology Conference in New Orleans, discussing urban archaeology in the modern era.
Historic Alexandria is conducting an Annual Survey of Museum-Goers to gather feedback on how they can better engage residents and visitors. Participants who complete the survey may win one of ten $100 Visa gift cards.
Several events are scheduled throughout January in Alexandria, including American History Trivia at Port City Brewing Company on January 16 and Meaningful Conversations focusing on immigration and refugees at the Alexandria Black History Museum on the same day.
Musicians Seán Gavin and Josh Dukes will perform at The Lyceum on January 16, while Gadsby's Tavern Museum offers free admission during Inauguration Weekend on January 18-19.
The city also invites residents to participate in various other activities such as specialty tours inspired by Hamilton at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and an Outlandish Tour at Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum starting January 26.
