The City of Alexandria is hosting a series of events and activities to celebrate Black History Month throughout February. This week, there are several exciting events taking place that you won't want to miss.
First up is the African American Film Series, which is being held at the library. As part of this series, the film "The Banker" will be shown. Inspired by true events, the movie tells the story of two entrepreneurs in the 1960s who come up with a brilliant plan to fight for housing integration and equal access to the American Dream. This film is a powerful portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of the African American community during that time.
In addition to the film series, there will also be a Black History Teen Movie Night. This event is specifically for teenagers and offers a free Friday night movie screening. Refreshments will be provided, making it a fun and enjoyable evening for all.
For the younger audience, there is StoryTime for Little Historians, a program hosted by the Alexandria Black History Museum. This monthly program uses books written by and about African American people and other communities of color to educate and inspire young visitors. Geared towards children aged 5-8, StoryTime is a free and educational experience that celebrates Black history.
Finally, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new African American Waterfront Heritage Trail signs. The event, organized by the African American Heritage Trail Committee, will celebrate the installation of 11 new interpretive signs along Alexandria's historic waterfront. These signs and orientation panels shed light on the rich history of the African American community in Alexandria spanning several centuries. The ceremony will take place at the Fishtown sign in Founders Park, followed by a reception at the Torpedo Factory.
All of these events offer reasonable disability accommodation, and the contact information for accommodation requests is provided for each event.
So, if you're looking for ways to celebrate Black History Month, be sure to check out these exciting events happening in Alexandria this week. From thought-provoking films to engaging activities for all ages, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
