The Alexandria Black History Museum is set to host a day of activities on Saturday, December 14, focusing on African American culture and the traditions of Kwanzaa. The event promises educational and engaging experiences for families.
The morning will begin with "Story Time for Little Historians" from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., featuring storytellers who will share books written by and about African American people and other communities of color. This program is free and aims to provide cultural enrichment for children aged 5–8.
Following this, at 11 a.m., the museum will conduct the "2024 Kwanzaa How-To Workshop." This interactive session will explore the origins, principles, and practices of Kwanzaa through activities such as a candle-lighting ceremony, food tastings inspired by Kwanzaa traditions, craft ideas, and decorating tips. Tickets for this workshop are priced at $3 per person, with reservations recommended via https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Events.aspx.
Kwanzaa is a seven-day cultural celebration that starts on December 26 and ends on January 1. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to reaffirm African American heritage and community bonds. The workshop will focus on the holiday’s seven guiding principles: Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani).
