Tour Fort Ward this Veterans Day weekend to explore the Defenses of Washington and a veteran's dedication to preserving its history. The specialty tour is scheduled for November 9 at 10 a.m., featuring a walking tour of Fort Ward and the new exhibit, “Lewis Cass White: Preserving the Legacy of Fort Stevens.” Tickets are available at alexandriava.gov/shop for $15, or $12 for Historic Alexandria members and volunteers.
The exhibit highlights the efforts of Civil War veteran Lewis Cass White in preserving Fort Stevens, marking the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Stevens. White, who served with the 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the battle on July 11-12, 1864, worked to document eyewitness accounts and preserve Fort Stevens' remains. He was instrumental in installing a monument where President Abraham Lincoln stood during the battle and recognizing Battleground National Cemetery.
The exhibit includes personal accounts, documents, memorabilia from Fort Ward Museum’s Lewis Cass White Collection, photographs, and items from family descendants. It also touches on the Grand Army of the Republic, an influential Union veterans’ organization significant in White’s postwar life.
