A musical event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Alexandria will take place on Sunday, November 24. The concert, titled "A Musical Celebration of Lafayette," is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, located at 201 S. Washington Street.
In 1824, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a hero of the Revolutionary War, embarked on a Grand Tour of all 24 states in the United States. His visit was marked by celebrations that included ceremonies, balls, parades, and concerts throughout the country. To honor this historic occasion, Music of the Regiment, a period-instrument wind band, will perform pieces reminiscent of those played during Lafayette's time.
The program includes works by Francis Johnson and compositions attributed to anonymous women under the pseudonym “A Lady…,” along with other period pieces. Attendees will hear grand marches, lively dance tunes, and early American patriotic airs performed on instruments from the early 19th century.
Tickets for the event are priced at $20 and can be purchased online through Alexandriava.gov/Shop.
