The City of Alexandria recently concluded its Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) with a closing ceremony on August 9. The program engaged 256 local youths aged 14 to 21 in paid work experiences, equipping them with skills for the job market. The event was attended by participants, business partners, and city leaders.
Managed by the Department of Community and Human Services’ Workforce Development Center, SYEP provided opportunities for youth to work at various businesses across the city. This year, 90 businesses from sectors including healthcare, automotive, finance, and education hosted students. Participants also took part in workshops and webinars on topics such as financial literacy and mental health in the workplace.
Joel Gojela, a student from Alexandria City High School who participated in the program, shared his experience: “I learned how to present people new information about things happening in Alexandria from years and even decades ago,” he said. “I felt that I had a good role in helping to improve, and for me to get closer to, the Alexandria community.”
In addition to business involvement, AT&T and Comcast played significant roles in supporting participants. AT&T's contribution allowed five more youths to join this year's program. Comcast donated laptops to participants, enhancing their digital skills for future employment.
