The City of Alexandria has announced the selection of a design team for the renovation of City Hall and Market Square. The international design firm LEO A DALY will lead the renovation efforts for the historic 153-year-old City Hall building. Local firms Rust Orling Architecture and LandDesign will contribute their expertise to redesigning Market Square. The design phase is expected to continue until early 2026, with construction planned from 2026 to 2028.

“This is an exciting first step in a long-awaited process,” said City Manager James Parajon. “City Hall and Market Square should reflect this great city, our history, and the commitment to equitable services that our community expects. We look forward to reimagining how to ensure 301 King Street is a source of pride for our employees and residents.”

Market Square has been central to civic life in Alexandria since its founding in 1749. Currently, both the Market Square Plaza and Garage need significant structural repairs, providing an opportunity to reassess their design and function alongside City Hall.

Built in 1871, the current City Hall serves as a workplace for over 300 city employees but requires major updates due to aging infrastructure. Planned improvements include repairing building components, enhancing operating systems, optimizing space use, improving circulation and wayfinding, boosting security measures, and facilitating community engagement.

The project aims to provide a revitalized environment that better serves city staff, residents, and visitors while maintaining City Hall as Alexandria's government seat into the future.

Community involvement is encouraged throughout this renovation project via a comprehensive engagement plan designed to include nearby residents, businesses, and all Alexandrians in the design process.

For those interested in more information about the project or wishing to participate in its development can visit local Farmers’ Markets on September 14 or check online for further details.
