The City of Alexandria has dispatched the 2024 Business Personal Property Tax Bills to businesses operating within the city as of January 1, 2024. Business owners who have not received their tax bill by September 1 are advised to contact Business Tax at businesstax@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4800, or reach out to the City's Treasury Division at payments@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4800. Those with a change of address that was not previously reported should notify Business Tax to ensure they receive a bill before the October 7, 2024 due date.
Businesses receiving a bill based on statutory assessment should fill out the 2024 Business Personal Property Tax Return and provide an itemized asset listing for a revised bill. Businesses that have relocated within the city but have not reported this change should complete an interdepartmental form for their new location. Additionally, businesses that have moved out of the city or ceased operations should complete a cessation of business form for the relevant calendar year. These forms can be accessed at alexandriava.gov/BusinessTax.
Payments for Business Personal Property Tax are due by Monday, October 7. Businesses opting to pay by mail must include their account number on checks or money orders and send them along with the payment coupon to City of Alexandria Business Personal Property, P.O. Box 34901, Alexandria, VA 22334-0901. Information on other payment methods, including eCheck, City Hall drop box, or online credit/debit card payments is available at alexandriava.gov/Payments. Returned checks and online payments incur a $35 fee.
A late payment penalty and interest will apply to accounts unpaid by the due date. A late payment penalty of either 10% of the tax plus late filing penalty or $10—whichever is greater—will be charged if unpaid by October 7, 2024. An additional penalty of up to 15% (totaling up to 25%, or $10 whichever is greater) applies if paid after November 6, 2024. Interest accrues annually at a rate of 10% in the first year and decreases to 5% each subsequent year.
The Finance Department remains open during regular business hours from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., although business owners are encouraged to utilize one of several convenient contact-free payment options available around-the-clock.
