The City of Alexandria is set to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, aligning with nationwide festivities. This period aims to honor the contributions and diverse cultures of the Hispanic and Latino/x communities in both the United States and Alexandria.
Residents and visitors can expect various events throughout the month, encouraging participation in cultural activities that highlight the vibrant heritage of these communities. A full list of events can be found on the city's Hispanic Heritage webpage.
In a visual tribute, 20 Latin American flags will be displayed in Market Square at 300 King Street during the celebration period. Additionally, City Hall will be illuminated with colors representing these nations each evening.
The city acknowledges its rich history with Hispanic residents, some of whom are recent immigrants while others have deep-rooted family ties predating the nation's founding. Notably, in the 1980s, a community from El Salvador established itself in what is now known as Chirilagua. The city's website offers insights into this area's cultural history.
