The City of Alexandria has dispatched the 2024 Personal Property Tax Bills to all registered vehicle owners. Payments are due by Monday, October 7, 2024. The tax rate remains unchanged from last year at $5.33 per $100 of assessed valuation.

Economic factors linked to the COVID-19 pandemic had previously driven up car values nationally over the past two years. However, these values have since normalized as of January 1, 2024. Consequently, no Assessment Ratio will be applied for Tax Year 2024.

The City Council is focusing on providing State Car Tax Relief for vehicles with lower assessments. Starting in 2022, any qualifying personal use vehicle assessed at $5,000 or below receives full tax relief. This year, the city is sending out $0.00 due tax bills where applicable to inform vehicle owners about their relief benefits. These bills are informational and should not be returned with payments.

Late payment penalties and interest will apply to unpaid or late-postmarked taxes after the due date. A penalty of 10% of the tax plus a late filing penalty or $10—whichever is greater—will be imposed if not paid by October 7, 2024. An additional penalty will increase this total to 25%, or $10—whichever is greater—if paid after November 6, 2024. Interest accrues annually at a rate of 10% for the first year and decreases to 5% each subsequent year.

Virginia law does not allow waivers for taxes, penalties, or interest due to non-payment ability or failure to receive a bill. Vehicle owners who haven't received their bill should contact the City's Treasury Division via email at payments@alexandriava.gov or call them at 703-746-4800 (Option 2) before October 7.

The Finance Department offers assistance during regular business hours from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but encourages using convenient contact-free payment options available around-the-clock:

- Online: Pay via credit card (fee applies) or eCheck (no fee) at alexandriava.gov/Payments.

- By Mail: Send checks/money orders to City of Alexandria P.O Box.

- Drop Box: Use the Royal Street drop box located at City Hall.

- In Person: Visit Treasury Division locations during business hours.
