The Eugene Simpson Stadium Dog Park is set to reopen on Monday, July 15 at noon. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, along with Project Implementation, have addressed major issues following the termination of the construction contractor. The park is now deemed safe for public use. However, some items remain unfinished, including a new message board, replacement plantings, and light reconnections that do not necessitate the park's closure.
Certain areas with new trees and turf will stay fenced off until fall to ensure proper establishment. In early August, the park will temporarily close for 2-3 days to reconnect the lights. The community will receive advance notice regarding any closures required for ongoing work.
The city dog park located at 521 East Monroe Avenue remains open for public use during renovations. Additional information about the city's dog parks can be found at alexandriava.gov/Dogs.
