The City of Alexandria is observing Disability Pride Month in July, commemorating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enacted on July 26, 1990. This legislation prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in public life, including employment, education, and transportation.

The city acknowledges the ADA as a pivotal civil rights law that has significantly advanced the rights and opportunities for people with disabilities. Throughout this month and beyond, Alexandria honors the achievements and experiences of its residents with disabilities.

Mayor Justin Wilson stated, “I would like to recognize the many Alexandrians with disabilities and the valuable contributions they make to our city. During this commemoration period, we recommit ourselves to the work that still needs to be done to ensure everyone has full access to our City services and initiatives.”

To fulfill its commitment to equality, Alexandria has established the Office of Human Rights. This office works to combat discrimination and protect human rights within the city. It collaborates with the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities (ACPD), which advises city leadership on policies affecting residents with disabilities. The ACPD also provides scholarships and awards for advocacy efforts supporting individuals with disabilities.

The city offers various therapeutic recreation programs for adults and children with disabilities. These include transportation through the DOT Paratransit Program, summer camps, and other youth, teen, and adult programs. Services are also available for older adults and those with developmental disabilities.

For more information about Disability Pride Month or if language assistance is needed, residents can contact LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.3960.

Alexandria is celebrating its 275th anniversary from April through September. The historic city invites participation in events marking its past while defining a brighter future at alexandriava.gov/ALX275.
