The City of Alexandria is inviting high school students to register for the 11th Annual Youth Leadership Conference. The event will take place from August 6-8 at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center. Students must register by August 2 to participate.
This year's conference theme is "The Power of you!" and it is open to rising 9th through 12th graders residing in Alexandria. The conference aims to empower young leaders through interactive workshops that teach engagement, leadership, and advocacy skills while connecting them with community resources.
An afternoon networking session with community leaders will be part of the conference, facilitating youth-adult partnerships. Participants will include representatives from the City Council, school board, city boards and commissions, non-profit executives, and city staff. This session provides a platform for organizations to connect with youth leaders and share volunteer and leadership opportunities. Community leaders interested in attending must register by August 1.
Students who attend the entire conference are eligible for a $20 gift card. They will also receive updates throughout the year on internships, volunteer roles, leadership opportunities, and other ways to get involved.
The Youth Leadership Conference focuses on building developmental assets necessary for young people's success. These assets include feeling valued by their community, self-esteem, recognizing themselves as resources for others, and planning and decision-making skills.
The event is hosted by several organizations including the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy, the Alexandria Sexual Assault Center, the Alexandria Library, and the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria. More information about the conference can be found at alexandriava.gov/ACAP.
