Men's Basketball Clipped by Salisbury

18

Marymount University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 28

It came down to the wire for the Marymount University men's basketball team against Salisbury University on Friday afternoon, but the Saints came up just short in a 74-71 decision against the Sea Gulls.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Saints took a 38-34 advantage into the second frame to set up the dramatic finish. Salisbury took a 51-47 lead after seven minutes of play, but the Blue and White knotted the score two minutes later after back-to-back baskets from Roey Stern and Montell Cooper.

While Salisbury managed to maintain its advantage as the contest wore on, the Saints stuck close with some timely baskets from Marcus Stubbs and Cooper. With just over a minute to play, Salisbury seized a 69-61 lead. Wyatt Hockenberry answered for Marymount with a jumper from downtown to cut the lead to five points.

As Marymount sent the Sea Gulls to the foul line, Hockenberry added free throws of his own to make it a four-point game. With nine seconds left in regulation, Salisbury hit a pair of shots at the charity stripe to set the score at 74-68. Hockenberry nailed a 3-pointer, but it was too little, too late, as time expired.

Hockenberry finished the game with a career-high 24 points on 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. Stubbs joined Hockenberry at the 20-point plateau with 20 points on 4-of-7 shooting from deep. Cooper rounded out MU's double-digit scorers with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.

The Saints look to bounce back on Monday, January 31, when they trek to Scranton, Pennsylvania, for a 4:00 p.m. tilt against Marywood University.
