Swing dancers! 1940s Jazz Band! General George Patton resurrected! Fife and Drum Corps! All these and more will highlight Alexandria's Annual D-Day Commemoration planned for June 4 on Market Square.
It marks the 13th annual such celebration, planned and executed by the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee. As part of Alexandria’s participation in Sister Cities International, the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee promotes educational and cultural exchanges between Alexandria and Caen, France.
The city of Caen, in western Normandy, was the center of some of the heaviest fighting after the Allies landed on the nearby beaches that marked the beginning of the end of World War II, 79 years ago.
Alexandria’s Sister City with Caen, now chaired by Angelique Moss, was started in 1990. One of its committed volunteers, Kerem Bilge, is overseeing the organization of the D-Day commemoration.
The program will include period swing music and exhibition dancers, static displays and reenactors, performances by the U.S, Army Fife and Drum Corps and the Alexandria Citizens Band, and a short formal ceremony with the mayor and city officials.
The event is made possible through the generous support of Yates, Alexandria Toyota, Ting Internet, Onelife Fitness, Mr. and Mrs. Doug John, Alexandria Radio Club, and Mr. Jan Maas.
The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended. To request a reasonable accommodation or an alternative format, e-mail Jim.Holloway@alexandriava.gov, or call 703.746.4702, or Virginia Relay 711.
