The Alexandria Health Department and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria have recently released the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Fall 2023 Progress Report, providing an update on the city's efforts to improve community health. The report focuses on the priority areas of mental health, poverty, and housing, as identified by Alexandrians in the 2019 Community Health Assessment.

According to the report, significant progress has been made in implementing the CHIP, with 70 out of the 80 planned tactics currently in progress. Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria Chair Allen Lomax expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating, "The wonderful progress made so far implementing the CHIP shows the positive impact of our community working together."

The report highlights several tactics that have been implemented, including the launch of a Healthy Homes Network, the introduction of RAISE trainings for trauma and advocacy, and the provision of legal and social services for people with substance use disorders through the Alexandria Treatment Court.

Furthermore, the report acknowledges the contribution of the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria grants, which have provided over $80,000 in funding to organizations advancing CHIP priorities. These grants have supported various projects, such as community "walk the block" events, service referrals for residents facing homelessness, and health education for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.

However, the report also emphasizes the challenges faced in achieving progress, including funding limitations, staffing issues, language access needs, and increased service demand. To address these challenges, the Monitoring and Evaluation Team has been providing guidance sessions to tactic owners, hosting over 80 sessions since the release of the CHIP.

Looking ahead, Nathaniel Lewis, Public Health Planner at the Alexandria Health Department, announced that the next progress report will be released in spring 2024. He emphasized the ongoing nature of the CHIP's work, stating, "Progress on the CHIP happens every day. Together, we can improve the health of our community."

For those interested in getting involved in Alexandria's CHIP work or learning more about it, the CHIP 2025 web page provides further information. The report also provides contact details for individuals who require reasonable disability accommodation or prefer communication in another language, ensuring accessibility for all community members.
