The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is inviting the community to participate in World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1. This global event is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), as well as celebrating advancements for individuals living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS.
According to global statistics, over 35 million people have died from HIV and AIDS-related illnesses, including members of the Alexandria community. While anyone can contract HIV, systemic racism and barriers to healthcare mean that Black, non-Hispanic, or Hispanic individuals are disproportionately affected both in Alexandria and across the United States.
Progress against HIV and AIDS is being made worldwide. With improved access to treatment, many people with AIDS now live longer and healthier lives. Efforts such as education on HIV and AIDS, practicing safe sex, receiving pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and medical treatments that reduce the transmission risk are crucial steps in preventing future infections.
Getting tested for HIV remains a vital step in combating the disease and maintaining personal health. Affordable and confidential testing services are available throughout Alexandria. Residents can find more information about local testing options on AHD's HIV Testing webpage.
For further details about HIV and AIDS within Alexandria, residents are encouraged to visit the website of the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS.
Additionally, free interpretation and translation services are offered for those who prefer communication in other languages. For assistance, individuals can email LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or call 703-746-3960.
