Alexandria, VA - The Alexandria Police Department has announced a new pilot program that will introduce a contractor to provide parking enforcement services in Old Town, with a focus on King Street. The program will see the collaboration of a third-party vendor, Reimagine Parking, who will work alongside the City's existing parking enforcement officers.
The contractors, who have been specifically authorized to issue citations, will not be responsible for towing, vehicle relocation, or booting. They will be easily identifiable by their uniforms, which will include reflective vests clearly stating that they are contractors for the City of Alexandria. Additionally, they will possess company-issued identification and wear shirts branded with the company's logo.
Starting from Wednesday, December 27, 2023, the contractors will be conducting parking enforcement operations from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Friday. Their presence during these hours aims to ensure effective enforcement of parking regulations in Old Town.
The Alexandria Police Department has provided a contact number, 703-746-4800, for residents and visitors who have any questions or concerns regarding the new parking enforcement program.
The introduction of a parking enforcement contractor is expected to streamline and enhance parking enforcement efforts in Old Town. The collaboration with Reimagine Parking will enable the City of Alexandria to effectively manage parking violations, ensuring a smoother traffic flow and improved parking availability for residents and visitors.
According to Chief Michael Brown of the Alexandria Police Department, "The addition of a parking enforcement contractor will provide valuable support to our existing officers, allowing us to better address parking violations and improve the overall parking experience in Old Town."
The decision to hire a third-party contractor was made after careful consideration of various factors, including the need for additional resources to manage parking enforcement in a busy area like Old Town. The pilot program will allow the City of Alexandria to assess the effectiveness of this approach and make any necessary adjustments in the future.
Residents and business owners in Old Town have expressed mixed opinions about the introduction of a parking enforcement contractor. While some appreciate the potential for improved enforcement and increased parking availability, others have voiced concerns about the contractor's limited responsibilities and the potential for a stricter enforcement approach.
Nonetheless, the City of Alexandria remains committed to addressing these concerns and ensuring that the parking enforcement contractor operates within the established guidelines and regulations. The collaboration with Reimagine Parking is seen as a step toward achieving a more efficient and effective parking enforcement system in Old Town.
As the pilot program begins, residents and visitors to Old Town can expect to see the presence of both parking enforcement officers and the newly introduced contractors, working together to enforce parking regulations. They will play a vital role in maintaining order and facilitating a smoother parking experience for all.
