Alexandria hosts archaeology month with diverse historical events

Virginia Archaeology Month is being celebrated throughout October in Alexandria, featuring events and programs that focus on archaeological sites and preservation efforts. One of the activities includes "Slip Into the Past at Art Safari," scheduled for October 19 at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. Participants can experiment with 19th-century ceramic slip designs.

The Tables of Conscience Dinner will take place on October 26, aiming to raise funds for scholarships named after Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas. The dinner will feature discussions based on Angie Thomas's book "The Hate You Give."

A concert featuring traditional Irish music by Donna Long, Peter Brice, and Samantha Suplee is set for October 10 at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum. Tickets are available for purchase.

On October 12, the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden will host a Civil War Walking Tour titled "Beyond the Battlefield." The tour covers stories from Civil War-era Alexandria, including military occupation and emancipation.

The Lee-Fendall House will also offer a lecture on its history as a Union Army hospital during the Civil War on October 12. The lecture will explore daily operations and medical history made there.

Elizabeth Reese will present a lecture about Lafayette’s return visit to America in 1824 at the Alexandria History Museum on October 16. This event commemorates Lafayette's journey through America.

Various tours are scheduled throughout October, including an architectural walking tour of Alexandria on October 19 and Halloween-themed events like "Witchcraft in the Walls" at Carlyle House Historic Park.

Historic Alexandria museums have announced their operating hours for visitors interested in exploring local history further.
