As the year comes to a close, Historic Alexandria extends gratitude to its supporters and looks forward to new opportunities in 2025. Several events are scheduled for January, offering diverse cultural experiences.
Seán Gavin, a renowned performer of traditional Irish music, will perform at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum on January 16. Tickets are available for $25 or $10 for those under 18. Gavin is celebrated as the first musician born outside Ireland to win the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and has made significant contributions to traditional Irish music education.
On January 18, Tables of Conscience book-themed dinners return to raise funds for scholarships named after Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas. Participants will discuss "Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin," a compilation highlighting African American poets and essayists.
The Alexandria Black History Museum hosts Story Time for Little Historians on January 11, focusing on African American literature and Kwanzaa principles. Additionally, from January 15 through February 28, the Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition will be displayed at City Hall's Vola Lawson Lobby.
Meaningful Conversations about Racism resumes on January 16 with discussions on refugees and immigrants at the Alexandria Black History Museum. Other events include an Outlandish Tour at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum starting January 26 and Tavern Games Night at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on January 31.
An intimate reception with General Washington is planned for February 1 at the Historic Duvall House, celebrating his return from the Revolutionary War in 1783.
