Light snow has begun to accumulate in the City of Alexandria today, Wednesday, February 19. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory that will be in effect from 7-11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, February 20. This weather condition is expected to affect commutes on both Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
The roads are anticipated to be slippery due to hazardous conditions which could impact travel during the Thursday morning commute. Temperatures are forecasted to drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
In response, the city's crews have applied brine to all critical roadways, particularly focusing on ice-prone areas such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. Pre-treatment activities are also being conducted at schools, Metrorail stations, and recreation facilities with continued treatment planned as needed.
The Department of Community & Human Services Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Road will operate on a 24/7 basis until 7 a.m. Friday, February 21.
Residents are encouraged to report debris like fallen trees or downed traffic signals by calling 703.746.4444 for non-emergency issues and only use 911 for emergencies.
Local authorities advise residents to stay informed about current weather conditions and forecasts through local media outlets. It is recommended that residents avoid driving under severe winter conditions if possible. For those who must drive, ensure your vehicle is adequately fueled and carry essential emergency supplies including a charged cell phone.
