The City of Alexandria has launched its first Eco-City Newsletter, providing residents with updates on environmental initiatives and events from January to March 2025. The newsletter highlights various programs, success stories, and upcoming activities designed to promote sustainability in the community.
A significant announcement is the introduction of the Eco-City Homes program. "The City of Alexandria is excited to announce Eco-City Homes," which aims to help residents become more sustainable at home by saving energy and money while improving comfort. Residents have responded positively, noting the usefulness of information provided by the city, including tax exemptions for solar energy.
In addition to this program, the newsletter provides tips on weatherizing homes to improve energy efficiency. This involves using insulation and sealing gaps to prevent drafts and lower energy bills. Residents can also benefit from federal tax credits when hiring certified professionals for home audits.
A notable success story is shared about the Chick Armstrong Recreation Center, where recent upgrades have significantly reduced gas usage by 60% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The improvements include a new Building Automation System that optimizes heating and cooling according to specific zones within the center.
The newsletter also features interviews with key staff members involved in these initiatives. Valerie Amor, Energy Manager for the city, discusses her role in reaching Environmental Action Plan goals and piloting a new City Building Performance Program. Coline Hay, Recreation Manager at Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, emphasizes their focus on environmental education and invites residents to explore their offerings.
Residents are encouraged to participate in Earth Month activities throughout April, including educational events hosted by Alexandria Libraries and the Eco-City Festival scheduled for May 10 at Ben Brenman Park. Additionally, nominations are open for the 2025 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award.
Recognition was given as well to RPCA for earning national accreditation for excellence from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. The city has also received $197,700 through Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grants aimed at promoting energy efficiency among residents.
For further information on these initiatives or sustainability resources, residents are directed to visit Alexandria's official website or follow @EcoCityALX on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
