The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is set to begin Phase 2 of a pilot walk-only zone on the 200 block of King Street starting March 14. This initiative was initially requested by the City Council during their September 2024 Legislative Meeting and aims to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly space. The first phase took place from November 22, 2024, through January 3, 2025.

Phase 2 will continue to assess the feasibility of this change while collecting community feedback. Previous pilots in other sections of King Street have become permanent pedestrian zones.

The second phase will last from March 14 to September 30, allowing for more community engagement and data collection. Depending on the results, the City Council might consider enacting a permanent walk zone ordinance in fall 2025.

For updates and further information about this project, residents are encouraged to visit the project's website.
