The Alexandria Health Department, in collaboration with the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria, has published the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Winter 2024/25 Progress Report. This document outlines the current status of initiatives aimed at addressing key health priorities identified in Alexandria's 2019 Community Health Assessment: mental health, poverty, and housing.
As of January 2025, 74 out of the planned 80 CHIP tactics are underway. These efforts are managed by various city agencies, nonprofits, coalitions, and boards and commissions. Highlighted projects include the revitalization of the Girls on the Run NOVA youth program, the launch of ALX Beyond—a youth resource database—and activities by the Alexandria Eviction Prevention Task Force.
Funding from Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria grants has been instrumental since 2021. Over $134,000 has been allocated to local nonprofits working on CHIP initiatives. Grant-funded projects have reported significant progress in areas such as free home repairs, post-partum peer support groups, and rapid re-housing services for those facing homelessness.
As CHIP approaches its final year in 2025, there is enthusiasm about ongoing progress. AHD Public Health Planner Sean Curry remarked on this excitement: “It’s really exciting to see so many of these community-driven efforts come to life,” adding anticipation for future developments including the upcoming Community Health Assessment (CHA).
The CHA for 2024-2025 is still being conducted and aims to delve into health issues within Alexandria. The findings from this assessment will guide the creation of a new Community Health Improvement Plan covering 2026-2030.
Allen Lomax, Chair of Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria noted: “Our city has changed so much since the last 2019 Community Health Assessment,” expressing hope that lessons learned from CHIP will continue to engage residents as new priorities are set.
