The City of Alexandria has announced the opening of a public comment period for the proposed update to its Green Building Policy, inviting residents to submit feedback until May 12, 2025. Comments can be submitted online at AlexandriaVA.gov/GreenBuilding.

According to the city's Long Range Interdepartmental Work Plan, the Office of Climate Action initiated the policy update in coordination with various city departments, including Planning & Zoning, Housing, and others. The current policy, introduced in June 2019, affects all Development Site Plans and Development Special Use Permits, utilizing third-party sustainability certifications with designated performance points.

The prospective policy revisions focus on three primary objectives: identifying significant and effective solutions, enhancing regulatory clarity, and minimizing unnecessary certification-related costs. Input was provided by the Green Building Policy Advisory Group, formed by the City Manager on December 28, 2023, to assist in the update process.

Individuals seeking further information or wishing to contribute feedback on the proposed changes are encouraged to visit AlexandriaVA.gov/GreenBuilding.
