Rep. Don Beyer, representing Virginia's 8th District in the U.S. Congress since 2015, has recently shared his concerns regarding the impact of tariffs imposed by former President Trump. The tweets from April 11, 2025, address the growing financial strain on small business owners at Eden Center, particularly due to tariffs targeting countries like China and Vietnam.
In an April 11, 2025, tweet, Beyer noted that "Trump’s tariffs – including 10% tariffs on nearly every country, a paused 46% tariff on Vietnam, and a rapidly escalating trade war with China – are creating huge uncertainty for Eden Center's small business owners and workers." This uncertainty persists eight months after the tariffs' implementation, and it has been particularly challenging for Eden Center's community.
A subsequent tweet on the same day amplified the concerns of the local community as voiced by Jess Nguyen from the Vietnamese advocacy group Viet Place Collective. Nguyen stated, "'Financially, this tariff could devastate small family-run businesses that have served as anchors of our community for generations.”
Beyer continued to highlight the potential impact on businesses in his final tweet of the day. An assistant manager at Good Fortune Supermarket mentioned that they are likely to raise prices and incur financial losses. “If the purchase price changes, we have to do that,” she elaborated, emphasizing their attempt to minimize the price increase despite possible losses.
Don Beyer, originally from Trieste and an alumnus of Williams College, has been a member of Congress for a decade.
