Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire released the outcomes of his 100-Day Action Plan, marking significant steps toward fostering collaborative policing in the city. The report aims to bolster a healthy and resilient police workforce, contributing to Alexandria's safety.
McGuire's "First 100 Days" details his efforts to address departmental priorities that include forging new community relationships and re-evaluating policies for improved efficiency. "Over the last four months, I have had the opportunity to listen to both our police officers and the community through several listening sessions we called 'Conversations with the Chief' to gain a deeper understanding of their key concerns. The outcomes shared in this plan represent the first step in our collective and collaborative journey to strengthen public safety in our city," McGuire stated.
Key initiatives during this period targeted a range of areas. A crime review process using evidence-based policing has been introduced, focusing on data-driven decisions and optimal resource deployment. Leadership vacancies were assessed, and departmental workload was analyzed to boost organizational efficiency.
The department engaged in site visits to law enforcement agencies, leading to the development of a crime review model tailored for the Alexandria Police Department. Policies were also evaluated to ensure equitable advancement opportunities within the department.
Commitment to the 30x30 Initiative was reinforced to promote workplace equity, alongside improvements to patrol shift schedules to enhance officers’ work-life balance.
Furthermore, a Chief’s Employee Advisory Board and a Community Advisory Board were established to foster dialogue between staff and the community, with participation from various stakeholders. An Officer Wellness Advisory Group was formed to support officers' stress management, and a pilot mentoring program, the Alexandria Initiative on Mentoring (AIM), was launched for middle school students.
“These action items set the foundation for how we will continue to deliver high-quality services to the communities we serve and reaffirms our commitment to our sworn and professional staff. The Alexandria Police Department is moving forward and will prioritize public safety while supporting our officers in service to our community,” McGuire added.
