Community members in Alexandria have the opportunity to learn how to create their own rain barrels at a workshop scheduled for April 29. The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Charles E. Beatley Central Library located at 5005 Duke Street.

This workshop is organized by the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services Stormwater Management Division, Alexandria Library, and the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD) as a part of Alexandria Earth Month celebrations. Attendees will have the chance to assemble a custom rain barrel for use in their garden or yard at a cost of $55. Advance registration on the NVSWCD website is necessary to participate.

The City encourages the use of rain barrels to collect and store roof runoff, which can be gradually released or utilized on the property instead of contributing to the storm sewer system. Additionally, participants who use rain barrels can qualify for credits or reductions on Stormwater Utility Fees through the SWU Fee Credit Program.

Spaces for the workshop are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, contingent on rain barrel availability.

Prospective participants are instructed to register on the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation website. Further event details for Alexandria Earth Month can be found on the City’s website.
