On April 11, 2025, Beyer posted a tweet criticizing the logic used by Trump's administration concerning trade deficits. Beyer highlighted the cases of Australia, Brazil, and Singapore, countries with which the United States has a trade surplus. He questioned how countries like Australia could end a trade deficit that does not exist, linking this post to the logic employed by Trump, which equates any trade deficit with "cheating."
In another tweet posted shortly after, Beyer pointed out the trade deficit situation with Madagascar. He mentioned that the U.S. buys most of its vanilla from Madagascar, which has one of the lowest GDP-per-capita rates globally. Despite this economic disparity, the U.S. imposed a 47% tariff on Madagascar. The post was made on April 11, 2025.
Further on April 11, 2025, Beyer addressed a situation involving Vietnam in a separate tweet. He remarked on the inconsistency of U.S. tariff policies, illustrating Vietnam's substantial tariff reductions on U.S. imports to appease the Trump administration, yet still facing a 46% tariff from the U.S. Beyer questions the measures Vietnam could take in response to such policies.
