The City of Alexandria is reminding residents of the upcoming special election on January 9 and the early voting options available to them. All registered voters in School Board District A are eligible to vote by mail or in person.

The deadline to vote early is Saturday, January 6, at 5 p.m. The Office of Voter Registration and Elections, located at 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100, will be open for early voting from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, there are extended hours on Saturday, December 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, January 2, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, January 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those who prefer to vote by mail, applications to request a mail-in ballot must be received by the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 29. There are several ways to access an application, including online through vote.elections.virginia.gov, by downloading the application from the City's Elections webpage, or by calling Voter Registration and Elections at 703.746.4050.

Completed mail-in ballots must be either returned to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, or postmarked by January 9 and received in the office by noon on Friday, January 12.

In-person voting on Election Day, January 9, will take place at designated polling places in School Board District A from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are encouraged to confirm their voting location and registration at vote.elections.virginia.gov or by calling the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 703.746.4050.

For those who missed the normal registration period, Same Day Registration is available on Election Day. To register and vote on the same day, individuals must be in the correct locality and at the correct polling location. Provisional ballots will be issued, which will not be scanned or reflected in the unofficial results on election night. However, once it is verified that these provisional votes are properly cast, they will be included in the official vote tally for the election.

Angela Turner, General Registrar and Director of Elections, emphasized the importance of participating in the special election: "We encourage all eligible voters in School Board District A to exercise their right to vote in this special election. It is crucial for residents to have their voices heard and play a role in shaping the future of their community."

Residents can find complete election information, including voter registration requirements, sample ballots, precinct maps, and ID requirements, on the City's Elections webpage at alexandriava.gov/Elections.

For more information or for reasonable disability accommodation, residents can contact Angela Turner, General Registrar and Director of Elections, at voters@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4050, Virginia Relay 711.

With the special election just around the corner, the City of Alexandria is making sure residents are well-informed about the early voting options available to them.
