The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has issued a rabies alert following the discovery of a rabid raccoon near Dora Kelley Nature Park. The raccoon, which was found on October 27, 2024, had an encounter with a dog in the vicinity of Sanger Avenue along a park trail. Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of rabies in the animal. While the raccoon is now deceased and the dog is under confinement, there remains an elevated risk in the area.
Residents who have had physical contact with a raccoon are urged to contact AHD at 703.746.4910 during regular business hours.
To ensure safety for both people and pets, AHD advises against feeding or approaching wild, stray, or feral animals, regardless of their demeanor. Pet owners should ensure that their dogs and cats are current on vaccinations and adhere to leash laws in public spaces.
Rabies is described as a preventable but deadly viral disease transmitted through saliva via bites or scratches from infected animals. Symptoms in animals can include unexpected aggression, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, and abnormal walking behavior such as staggering or sluggishness.
Individuals observing these symptoms in animals should contact Alexandria Animal Control at 703.746.4444. Concerns about potential exposure to rabies should be directed to AHD at 703.746.4910 during normal business hours.
