The City of Alexandria is urging residents to participate in the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by disposing of unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications safely. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at several designated drop-off sites across the city.

These sites will be staffed by personnel from the Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. Locations include the Alexandria Police Department Headquarters, Fire Station 210, The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray, Walgreens Pharmacy on King Street, and Woodbine Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center.

In addition to accepting medications for disposal, free at-home drug disposal kits will be distributed as part of CADCA’s Over the Dose Campaign. This initiative aims to reduce medication misuse and prevent overdoses by encouraging safe disposal practices.

The City notes that unused or expired medications pose a risk if kept at home due to potential misuse, particularly with opioids. In 2023 alone, Alexandria collected 2,647 pounds of unused medication—a significant increase from previous years.

Improper disposal of drugs can also harm the environment. When flushed down toilets or sinks, medications may enter local waterways since wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to handle them effectively. For those without access to safe disposal options during this event, alternative methods are recommended: mix medications with substances like kitty litter or coffee grounds before sealing them in a bag or container for trash disposal.
