The Alexandria Archaeological Commission has honored Marian Van Landingham with the 2024 Bernard "Ben" Brenman Archaeology in Alexandria Award for Outstanding Visionary Partner. The award was presented by Mayor Justin Wilson during a city council meeting on October 8, where Councilman John Chapman read the proclamation. Van Landingham's efforts over five decades have transformed the Torpedo Factory Art Center into a space for artists and archaeologists, promoting public engagement with Alexandria's historic waterfront.

The Brenman Award, established in 2007, recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to preserving Alexandria's heritage. Named after Bernard "Ben" Brenman, a retired U.S. Army colonel and activist dedicated to historical preservation, the award reflects the city's commitment to public education in archaeology.

In addition to this recognition, several events are scheduled in Alexandria celebrating its rich history and culture. The Lee-Fendall House Museum will host "Jazz Under the Stars" on October 19 to support its preservation work. Other events include lectures on historical figures like Marquis de Lafayette and Edgar Allan Poe at various museums across the city.

For those interested in local architecture, a walking tour is planned for October 19 at Carlyle House Historic Park. Additionally, Virginia Archaeology Month is being celebrated throughout October with programs highlighting archaeological sites across Alexandria.

Upcoming events also include Halloween-themed activities such as "Screams & Disease" at Lee-Fendall House Museum and "Witchcraft in the Walls" at Carlyle House Historic Park. These events offer unique insights into historical practices and folklore associated with these locations.

Alexandria continues to engage residents and visitors alike through educational programs supported by donations and special funding initiatives aimed at preserving its cultural heritage.
