The City of Alexandria has distributed the second half of 2024 real estate tax bills, along with refuse and stormwater utility fees, to property owners and mortgage companies. The real estate tax rate for the year is set at $1.135 per $100 of assessed value.

The refuse and stormwater utility fees follow the city's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. For this period, the refuse fee is $250 per can, while the stormwater utility fee stands at $162.05 per Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU).

Payments for these taxes and fees are due by November 15. A late payment penalty will be imposed on unpaid amounts after this date. The penalty increases if payments are made after November 30 or December 1, depending on the type of fee. Interest accrues annually on overdue taxes and penalties starting November 16.

Virginia law does not permit waivers for tax penalties or interest due to non-receipt of a bill or inability to pay. Property owners without a bill should contact Alexandria's Treasury Division before November 15 via email at payments@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703-746-4800, Option 2.

The city encourages using contact-free payment methods available around the clock:

- Online: Payments can be made by credit card (with a fee) or eCheck (no fee) at alexandriava.gov/Payments.

- By Mail: Send checks or money orders to City of Alexandria, P.O. Box 34750, Alexandria, VA 22334-0750.

- Drop Box: Place checks or money orders in the Royal Street drop box at City Hall by midnight on November 15.

- In-Person: Visit either Treasury Division in City Hall or West End Finance Office during business hours.

Alexandria residents aged 65 and older or those permanently disabled may qualify for real estate tax relief under an expanded income limit program starting in calendar year 2024. Applications are accepted until April 15, 2025.

Military veterans with a service-connected total disability may also qualify for full exemption from real estate taxes on their primary residence in Alexandria.
