Alexandria City Hall was illuminated in red and gold as part of Autism Acceptance Month. On April 2, recognized as Autism Acceptance Day, the Alexandria City Council reaffirmed April as Autism Acceptance Month during a Legislative Meeting.

This month is acknowledged nationally to foster awareness and acceptance of people's differences, promoting inclusion for neurodiverse individuals. The City of Alexandria encourages its community to embrace this opportunity and maintain this spirit throughout the year.

The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) has achieved the Certified Autism Center designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. This signifies that at least 80% of AFD's public-facing team members are trained in effective communication with autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. This recognition highlights the City's commitment to inclusivity and empathy in serving the community.

Support services are available for individuals with autism through the City's Developmental Disability Services webpage. Additionally, a toolkit from a multi-disciplinary team at the University of North Carolina is available to assist parents caring for family members with autism.

For those needing communication in another language, free interpretation and translation services can be accessed by emailing LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or calling 703.746.3960.
