The City of Alexandria has reported a significant achievement in its Vision Zero initiative, ending 2023 with zero traffic fatalities. This is the first time since the city adopted the Vision Zero goal in 2017 that such an outcome has been realized. The city's Vision Zero philosophy aims to eliminate roadway deaths and severe injuries by considering them preventable rather than inevitable.
While celebrating this milestone, it is crucial to acknowledge that many individuals and families continue to deal with the consequences of traffic crashes. Despite achieving zero fatalities, Alexandria experienced over a dozen severe injury crashes last year. Those affected include parents, children, spouses, siblings, friends, neighbors, and colleagues who may endure long-term pain and trauma. Some victims might eventually succumb to their injuries; one person from a 2023 crash remains in intensive care.
As the city moves forward into 2024, it encourages reflection on those impacted by traffic incidents and urges continued efforts toward enhancing street safety for all residents.
