The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Alexandria, effective until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12. The forecast predicts heavy snowfall ranging from four to six inches, which may affect commutes on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

In preparation for the storm, the City's Transportation and Environmental Services department has applied brine to critical roadways, especially those prone to ice such as hills, bridges, and overpasses. Additionally, the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities has conducted pre-treatment at schools, Metrorail stations, and recreational facilities and will continue as necessary. The Department of Community & Human Services is extending hours at its Winter Shelter located at 2355-A Mill Road from Monday evening until Thursday morning.

Residents are advised to stay informed through local media about current weather conditions and forecasts. For updates on road conditions within the state, calling 511 is recommended.

According to City Code Section 5-2-21 in Alexandria, residents and business owners must clear sidewalks adjacent to their properties within a specified time after snowfall ends. These time limits depend on the storm level: within 24 hours for up to eight inches of snow (Level 1), within 48 hours for more than eight inches (Level 2), and within 72 hours during blizzards or heavy snowfalls (Level 3). Those unable to clear snow themselves should arrange for assistance.
