Rep. Don Beyer, a U.S. Congress member representing Virginia’s 8th district since 2015, took to social media to express concerns about current U.S. trade policies and their implications. Beyer shared several tweets regarding the perceived inadequacies and potential repercussions of these policies on the economy and international relations.

On April 11, 2025, Beyer criticized former President Donald Trump's decision to declare a national emergency and impose tariffs on Canada. In his tweet, Beyer stated, "Trump declared a phony national emergency and imposed tariffs on Canada to punish them for ‘fentanyl smuggling." Our own government says the amount of smuggling at the northern border is less than 1%. How does Canada get out of tariffs for something we admit they’re not doing?" Beyer questioned the justification for these tariffs, given that government data indicates minimal fentanyl smuggling across the U.S.-Canada border.

In another tweet posted shortly after, Beyer addressed the economic risks associated with efforts to revive manufacturing jobs. He asserted, "Trump is risking our economy to bring back factory jobs that pay far less than jobs in fast-growing sectors like health care, clean energy, or data science." He referenced Howard Lutnick's television appearance, describing it as promoting outdated labor practices by stating, “screwing in little screws to make iPhones.”

Further elaborating on the trade policies, Beyer mentioned the broad impact of tariffs on international commerce. He tweeted, "You are blasting nearly every product from nearly every country with these tariffs, Senator Tillis called it ‘a trade war on all fronts.’ It hurts our alliances, it is hurting our economy, it hurts our ability to make and keep free trade agreements." He echoed concerns about how these policies might strain alliances and undermine the U.S.'s ability to secure and maintain free trade agreements.

Don Beyer, aged 72, born in Trieste, Free Territory of Trieste, now resides in Alexandria. He is a Williams College alumnus, graduating in 1972.
