The Alexandria City Council Naming Committee has unanimously recommended changes to several street names in Alexandria, Virginia. The committee's recommendations include renaming North Breckinridge Place in honor of Harriet Jacobs, renaming Forrest Street to Forest Street, and rededicating or renaming North and South Jordan Street and Jordan Court in honor of either Thomasina Jordan or the Hughes family. They have also proposed rededicating or renaming North and South Early Street in honor of James Early, Charity Earley, Early (time concept), and Sarah A. Gray.

These recommendations were made following a public hearing on November 29, where the committee received input and support from community members. The committee has also requested the Historic Alexandria Resources Commission to further research the names of Thomasina Jordan, James Early, and Charity Earley before the City Council votes on the proposals.

Mayor Justin Wilson expressed gratitude for the Naming Committee's work and the community's input, stating, "I look forward to the Council's discussion and action on these recommendations as we work to reckon with our past and ensure Alexandria is a welcoming community for all."

The City Council will review and refine the Naming Committee's recommendations on January 9. The final proposals for each street will be voted on during an open public hearing on January 20 at City Hall's Council Chambers.

The streets in question were originally named after Confederate figures following a 1953 ordinance. The current effort to rename or rededicate these streets is part of the City Council's initiative to create a more inclusive community. The process is expected to take 15 years and aims to minimize disruption for residents and businesses.

This renaming initiative is one step towards acknowledging and addressing the city's historical associations with the Confederacy. By renaming these streets, Alexandria is taking a proactive approach in creating a more inclusive and welcoming community for all of its residents.
