The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has issued a warning to residents regarding potential exposure to measles in northern Virginia. The advisory comes in response to a confirmed case of measles in a Maryland resident who recently traveled internationally. The Maryland Department of Health has released a news statement titled "One Case of Measles Confirmed in Maryland Resident with Recent International Travel," providing full details of the situation.

According to the news release, individuals may have been exposed to the measles virus if they were present at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 27. The statement also lists additional locations in Maryland where exposures may have occurred.

The AHD recommends that individuals who have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, such as the MMR vaccine, or were born before 1957, do not need to take any further action. However, those who may be immunocompromised are advised to consult their healthcare provider for specific recommendations.

For individuals who are not fully vaccinated against measles and were born after 1957, the AHD advises monitoring for symptoms until February 17, 2024. Symptoms include a runny nose, fever above 101 degrees, cough, watery red eyes, and rash. If any of these symptoms appear, individuals should isolate themselves and seek immediate medical care. It is important to call ahead and inform the healthcare provider about the suspicion of measles.

In case of any additional questions or concerns, the Alexandria Health Department can be contacted at 703.746.4988. The Virginia Department of Health also provides more information about measles, symptoms, and vaccination on their measles site. Furthermore, individuals who require communication in a language other than English can avail of free interpretation and translation services by contacting LanguageAccess@alexandriava.gov or calling 703.746.3960.

The AHD's prompt response and dissemination of information aim to ensure the health and safety of the community in the face of potential measles exposure. By providing clear recommendations and access to resources, the AHD aims to minimize the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable individuals from its potentially severe consequences.

"We urge all individuals who may have been exposed to review the news release for recommended actions," said an Alexandria Health Department spokesperson. "By taking the necessary precautions and seeking appropriate medical care, we can prevent further transmission and safeguard the well-being of our community."

In light of this situation, it is crucial for individuals to stay vigilant and remain aware of any symptoms that may arise. By following the guidelines provided by the Alexandria Health Department and seeking medical attention when necessary, residents can contribute to the containment of the measles virus in northern Virginia.
