The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is urging residents to acknowledge and observe National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) on February 7, 2024. This nationwide event serves as a reminder of the disproportionate impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on the Black community.
According to data from the U.S. Census and the Virginia Department of Health, Black, non-Hispanic residents represent approximately 21% of the population in Alexandria. However, they account for a significant 56% of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the city. This disparity is not attributed to an increased prevalence of risky behavior, but rather stems from systemic racism, stigma, and barriers to healthcare.
On NBHAAD, the Alexandria Health Department aims to foster conversations that dismantle the stigma surrounding HIV diagnoses and improve access to testing, care, and education. By engaging and empowering the community, efforts can be made to prevent future HIV infections among Black Alexandrians.
"We recognize that in order to prevent future HIV infections among Black Alexandrians, we must encourage conversations that reduce stigma about HIV diagnoses. We must also improve access to HIV testing, care, and education. Together we can educate, engage, and empower Alexandrians about this crucial work," stated a representative from the Alexandria Health Department.
To address questions or concerns related to HIV and AIDS resources, individuals are encouraged to contact AHD's Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinic appointment line at 703.746.4888.
