The deadline to register or update existing voter registration for the March 5 Dual Presidential Primary Election is Monday, February 12, according to a press release issued on February 8, 2024. Individuals who fail to register or update their voter registration before this deadline may be required to cast provisional ballots through the Same Day Registration process.

In the upcoming Dual Party Primary Election, qualified voters in Virginia will have the opportunity to vote for either the Democratic or Republican nominee for President of the United States. However, voters are reminded that they can only vote in one primary and must indicate their choice to the Pollbook officer.

To ensure that their registration is up to date, voters are encouraged to check their registration status. They can do so by visiting vote.elections.virginia.gov, sending an email to voters@alexandriava.gov, or calling 703.746.4050. It is important for individuals who have changed their address since the last time they voted to update their registration information.

For those who are not yet registered or need to update their address, several methods are available. U.S. citizens living in Virginia who will be 18 or older by November 5, 2024, can submit their application online at vote.elections.virginia.gov before midnight on February 12. Alternatively, they can register in person at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections or download an application from alexandriava.gov/Elections, complete it, sign it, and mail it to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections. The application must be postmarked on or before February 12.

New or transferred registrants will receive voter information letters within one week of their registration date.

For individuals who choose to register to vote through the same day registration period, they must do so in person. Starting on February 13, same-day registration will be available at early voting locations or on election day at the voting location assigned to their current residential address.

In-person early voting for the Dual Presidential Primary Election is ongoing until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Registered voters are encouraged to review the sample ballot in advance, which can be found at alexandriava.gov/Elections along with the full list of voting hours.

To make voting more convenient, ballot drop boxes will be available at all polling places on March 5, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Additionally, a secure outdoor drop box, under video surveillance, is available in front of the Office of Voter Registration and Elections 24 hours a day until March 5 at 7 p.m. Voters can also choose to return their mail-in ballot by mail.

For those who wish to request a by-mail ballot, applications must be received in the Voter Registration Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 23. Completed ballots must either be returned to the Office of Elections by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, or be postmarked by March 5 and received in the office by noon on Friday, March 8.

To find out more about deadlines and other election information, including sample ballots, mail-in ballot applications, in-person early voting hours, precinct maps, and ID requirements, voters can visit alexandriava.gov/Elections.

For further assistance or information, the Office of Voter Registration and Elections can be contacted at voters@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4050. Virginia Relay 711 is also available for those who require reasonable disability accommodation.

As the deadline to register or update voter registration for the March 5 Dual Presidential Primary Election approaches, it is crucial for eligible voters in Virginia to take the necessary steps to ensure that they can participate in this important electoral process.
